I woke up early to a comfortable morning temperature of 58 degrees. Camp was packed up pretty rapidly, and Jewel Thief and I were hiking by 6:30AM. The trail steadily ascended all morning so that at lunch we were well over 8000’! Cool mountain breezes blowing across the patches of snow made pretty much the perfect hiking temperature. After 2 days in blistering heat our feet were pretty sore so we took it slower. We still were able to make 20 miles by 6PM – earliest I’ve been in camp yet. Tomorrow we’ll hike the 20 miles into Big Bear City to re-supply. Hope the trail grade and temperature stays like it was today.
