Jewel Thief & I got our typical late start out of town – we weren’t hiking until 11am. It was hot today and there weren’t any swimming holes either. The trail was strangely flat for the first few miles, but soon enough we came to the inevitable out-of-town climb. 3.5 miles of exposed switchbacks, glaring son, and 2500′ of climb didn’t make for my favorite section. Great views of the sharp teeth of Castle Crags made it somewhat more tolerable.
Once we were near 6000′, the trail leveled off and followed a ridgeline for the rest of the day. Soon enough I made it to Trinity Divide. A side trail wound down 500′ to a cluster of lakes. We dropped down and camped next to the first lake. The lake is quiet and still and surrounded by a serene beauty. Tomorrow we’ll head on towards Etna.
